The first important element in graphic design is color and it comes in different hues, shades and color composition. Most artist usually combine various colors based on the effect they want with the help of a color wheel which was invented with Sir Isaac Newton. To achieve colors that are more blended, colors next to each other in the color wheel will give you this effect while contrasting colors will give you a bold effect making your color pop.
In graphic work, lines help to give structure to the work and they are an important element of graphic design. Since lines divide elements in a page, they provide energy that can evoke emotions. Apart from the energy that lines give to compositions, they can also be composed of several layers to give layered designs.
It is also not uncommon to see shapes in graphic designs and they can either be geometric shapes or organic shapes. While using the rules of uniformity, organic shapes helps to make undefined objects wiggly and uneven. With geometric shapes however, uniform promotions are created with geometric shapes.
When you put elements side by side, you compare them and this creates contrast. Without contrast, everything would look the same and that is why this element removes boredom and gives clarity to the designs. There is energy when contrast is used it helps to make compositions easier to comprehend so that the viewer can appreciate them.
The relationship between elements in a composition is known as scale. By using scale, it is easy to attract viewers to a certain focal point. By experimenting with various scales, the artist can attract the viewer to a specific place and showing them where to look.
The grouping of elements is usually determined by space and it is another important element in graphic design. Without space, the composition can easily confuse the viewer as they try to figure out what it is. Using space is important since it helps to balance the designs making them look uniform.
Alignment is another important element for graphic designers and it basically is an imaginary axis that connects design elements. When texts are used, it is easy to achieve balance in visual representation when alignment is used. You can have more than one alignment pattern to have a sophisticated layering effect.
